Capybara pyjamas: the onesie of the world's most chilled-out animal

The right capybara pyjamas depend on who's going to wear them. The shop has two styles: the Kids' Plush Animal Onesie, in ginger capybara or brown capybara, from 100 to 140, and the Family Fleece Onesie, whose capybara comes in kids', women's and men's sizes. Before we get to sizes, a few facts about the animal, which isn't quite as placid in every situation as the videos would have you believe.
Why everyone loves the capybara
The capybara is the largest rodent in the world: an adult measures 1 m to 1.3 m long and weighs 35 to 65 kg in the wild, writes Christiane Denys, professor emerita at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (France's National Museum of Natural History), in an article published by the Belgian public broadcaster RTBF in July 2025 (RTBF / The Conversation, "Capybara : c'est quoi cet animal qu'on voit partout sur internet ?", in French). In it she describes a "capybara mania" on social media since 2020.
Its reputation as a zen animal comes down to its looks: a barrel-shaped body, eyes, ears and nostrils set high on its head, and a way of swimming almost fully submerged, with only its eyes and nostrils showing. In the cover photo, taken in the Brazilian Pantanal, a little bird has even perched on its head.

Its name comes from Tupi, a language of Brazil, and means roughly "grass eater" (Wikipedia, "Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris", in French). The same page explains that it lives in groups, most often of six to twenty animals, near the lakes, rivers and marshes of South America, and that it can stay underwater for nearly five minutes.
The calm does have its limits, though. Each group is led by a dominant male, and the pecking order is sometimes settled through aggressive encounters, according to Wikipedia. Christiane Denys also reports that the capybaras living in the suburbs of Buenos Aires are considered calm by most residents, except for the males fighting to lead the herd. She warns against the trend for pet capybaras: the animal needs a large territory, plenty of water and the company of its own kind, and in France you need an official licence, a "certificat de capacité", to keep one. Pyjamas remain the simplest way to have one at home.
Kids' capybara pyjamas: ginger or brown, from 100 to 140
The Kids' Plush Animal Onesie comes in two capybaras, ginger and brown, in all five sizes of the range, from 100 to 140. They're among the eighteen designs of the onesie, alongside the dinosaurs, unicorns, sharks and the panda.
According to the product page, every design has:
- thick, fluffy fleece flannel, for the sofa in the evening as well as for the night under the duvet;
- the animal's ears on the hood, and a contrasting tummy;
- two hidden pockets on the sides;
- a zip or button fastening, depending on the design, with a back opening so there's no need to take everything off to go to the loo.
Choose the size by the child's height, measured standing up and barefoot:
| Size | Child's height |
|---|---|
| 100 | 80-100 cm |
| 110 | 100-110 cm |
| 120 | 110-120 cm |
| 130 | 120-130 cm |
| 140 | 130-140 cm |
Searching for "girls' capybara pyjamas" or "boys' capybara pyjamas"? Both lead to the same style: the ginger and the brown suit everyone. If your child is between two sizes, our guide kids' kigurumis: what age, what size, what precautions explains how to decide. The slippers shown in the photos are not included.
Adult capybara pyjamas: women's S to XL, men's L to 3XL
For an adult, the shop's capybara pyjamas are the Family Fleece Onesie, in women's sizes S to XL and men's sizes L to 3XL. It's the only capybara style in adult sizes.
It's a one-piece onesie in thick, cosy fleece, with a full-length zip, the animal's ears on the hood and an appliqué paw on the front pocket. The cut is roomy, with long sleeves and straight legs. The product page presents it as winter loungewear, not as a party costume.

| Women S | 145-155 cm | 33-43 kg |
| Women M | 155-160 cm | 40-50 kg |
| Women L | 160-168 cm | 50-60 kg |

The whole family as capybaras
The Family Fleece Onesie dresses parents and children in the same capybara: it also comes in kids' sizes, from 8 to 16, for heights of 90 to 145 cm. Its product page even suggests a family photo with "five capybaras".
| Size | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Kids 8 | 90-105 cm | 12-17 kg |
| Kids 10 | 105-115 cm | 15-21 kg |
| Kids 12 | 115-125 cm | 21-25 kg |
| Kids 14 | 125-135 cm | 25-29 kg |
| Kids 16 | 135-145 cm | 29-33 kg |
Each listing is for a single onesie. For a family of four, choose "Capybara", then add each size to your basket, one after the other. There's no capybara for babies: the Baby Animal Kigurumi offers other animals, including the panda, the giraffe and the brown bear, and the family onesie also comes in panda and brown bear. Our ideas for matching family Christmas pyjamas have more suggestions. For a teenager, the onesie in women's or men's sizes is one of our cosy gifts for teens and young adults.
Washing capybara pyjamas
Both styles are machine washable and air dried, but not on the same programme: 30 °C on a delicate cycle for the Family Fleece Onesie, a normal cycle or hand wash for the Kids' Plush Animal Onesie.
To keep the fleece soft:
- Turn the onesie inside out and do up the fastening before washing: the hood and ears rub less against the drum.
- Wash it with soft fabrics, no denim or towels, which make fleece bobble.
- Dry it flat or on a hanger, in the open air, as the product pages say.
Our article how to wash and care for fleece pyjamas covers the other steps.
Precautions with a fleece onesie
Keep a roomy fleece onesie well away from flames, whatever the wearer's age. London Fire Brigade advises never to put a candle near anything that can catch fire, clothes included, to keep flames out of children's reach, and suggests LED candles as a safer option (London Fire Brigade, "Candles"). In front of a fireplace or a birthday cake, an adult keeps the sleeves and hood at a safe distance.
At night, a child old enough to sleep under a duvet can keep their capybara pyjamas on, with the hood pushed back and no extra covers: the fleece is already warm. If you've gone a size up, turn up the bottom of the legs so they don't tread on them on the stairs.
In short
For a child of 80 to 140 cm, the Kids' Plush Animal Onesie comes in ginger or brown capybara, chosen by height. For a woman, a man or the whole family, the Family Fleece Onesie comes in capybara from Kids 8 to Men 3XL. Both styles are in the shop, with free delivery.
